Predator Awareness in Alberta

Numbers of Big Game in our Eastern Slopes are declining rapidly!!

Copyright Alberta Wildlife Enhancement Society

Our mission is to provide support for our big game animals and their habitat in Alberta. And also to see that we maintain a sustainable population of big game animals by keeping a balance between predators and big game species in the interest of all outdoor enthusiasts.

Goals:

- To ensure Alberta Fish and Wildlife upholds its management plan that they have in place to balance predators and our big game species.

- To supply a source of up-to-date information and statistics for all outdoor enthusiasts to frequent and provide support to topics of their interest.

Issues:

- Decreasing numbers of big game animals in our Eastern Slopes due to predation.

- Demands for Buffer Zones around our Provincial and Federal parks in Alberta to restrict the management of wolves.

- New regulations for wolves in Alberta for hunters and trappers. (Quota's on wolves taken per year, and registration of all wolves taken by ranchers, hunters and trappers.)

Big Game numbers are declining rapidly !!!!

HUNTERS ARE LOSING THEIR RIGHT TO HUNT!!!

Special License draws are being cut due to a lack of big game!!!

Antlered elk draws have been cut in some of our mountain WMU's due to declining elk numbers, the bull to cow ratio in these areas is in dire straits

We have now lost the right to hunt antlerless elk in some of our mountain  WMU's due to declining numbers of elk from predation!!

Make sure to read these Alberta Fish and Wildlife Management Plans

Many hunters do not realize there is a wolf season in Alberta and that the use of bait is permitted! (some restrictions apply, be sure to read the hunting regulations)

Click here for the regulations on hunting wolves in Alberta.

We have elk survey numbers from different groups within the Government and also from biologists that show that big game numbers are down and that predation is mostly to blame!!!

We were at the Storm of Protest held  in Calgary on January 29th 2003 at which  a guest spoke about the reintroduction of wolves in Yellowstone being a success and that the elk herds of Yellowstone were doing just fine.

We have contacted different groups in the USA and are getting a different response to the question:

Are the elk of Yellowstone doing just fine with the introduction of wolves?

At this same Protest there was a comment from one of the organizers that read an e-mail he received from a concerned rancher in the Sundre area. The concerned rancher said he has been seeing a lot of wolves around his land and is afraid for his livelihood because of predation of his livestock. The organizer said that if he had that many wolves around he should sell his cows and start having wolf sighting tours .Then he would not have to ask the government for hand outs and drought aid packages.

Wolves and Grizzlies  are  the leading killers of elk in our Ya Ha Tinda Ranch area at 51% !

Native Hunting is accounting for 9% of the elk mortality in this same area!!

We now have a new Minister of Sustainable Resource Development The Honorable David Coutts. Make sure to send letters to him about your concerns with the lack of wildlife in our mountain WMU's. Be sure to make him aware of your sightings of predators on your outings! The signs of more wolves and grizzlies are everywhere, yet they are pulling grizzly draws from all over our mountain WMU's  and applying new restrictions on wolf hunting!!!

These are very serious concerns for the future of our Wildlife and hunting rights!!

The contact information is below for your MLA and our Minister of Sustainable Resource Development!

Did you know that pro-wolf supporters are calling for a  buffer zone of 50km around Banff National Park and Peter Lougheed Provincial Park to protect wolves?

And also to have a quota of two wolves for hunters and trappers?

And to have all wolf kills registered?

Update to registering wolf kills!

We must now register all wolf kills in any WMU's 300-316 or 400-426!

These are all new regulations that wolf supporters are trying to get put in place !!!

One has already been put in place! If we do not do anything to stop them there will be more restrictions put in place!!

Click to see this sample letter that Pro-Wolf supporters have been sending to our MLA's

WE MUST ACT NOW!!

What Can We Do?

bulletWrite a letter to your MLA and to the Minister of Sustainable Resource Development stating that no new regulations are needed on wolf hunting and that we need to Balance our predators and big game species before its too late!!!
